Paint splash sessions are the most popular 1st birthday session that I do in the studio – and coincidentally, they are my favourite too! I introduced them into my 1st birthday range because, in all honesty, I was finding cake smashes hit and miss with little ones. Some hated the texture, some found it overwhelming, and some simply didn’t like it! This ultimately led to upset children and disheartened parents, which is not the experience I want my clients to have. Don’t get me wrong, the final gallery of photos always came out better than parents expected, because I will find something that engages your little one – even if my phone ends up in the cake! But I needed something that would most likely be familiar in activity and texture that would be a hit from the minute we started.
With permission from Mummy and Daddy, here is an insight into Enys’ paint splash session that took place just before Lockdown 2.0.
I always start with ‘clean’ photographs. This gives little ones a chance to settle in, get used to being in the studio and relax. It’s also the perfect opportunity for parents and/or siblings to jump in and have some precious up to date family photographs taken too! We then move all props out of the way and bring out the paint…
I have a selection of outfits available in the studio for you to choose from, as well as all of the equipment needed; A4 canvas (that you take away with you at the end of your session), baby safe paint, brushes and wet wipes (for the emergency cleaning before we hit the bath tub! These sessions are fully customisable too – you may choose all the colours of paint, or just a select few to theme the photographs, if you are wanting to display your wall art in a particular room.
We all know that little ones have a short attention span, and we don’t want to overload their senses and upset them, so after 15-20 minutes of messy play and masterpiece creation, I ask that little one is prepared ready for a little tub time to clean up, and have some fun with bubbles!
Once we have had 15/20 mins of fun with the bubbles and all the paint has been washed away, Mummy/Daddy are handed a lovely fluffy hooded towel to get little one nice and cosy and dry (and in most cases ready for a nap!). Ta-da! You’d never know your baby was coated in paint from head to toe just a few minutes ago!
Before you leave we will arrange a time and date for you to come back to the studio to view your gorgeous gallery of images and decide what wall art you would love in your home. The acrylics and multi aperture frames are firm favourites amongst my clients and I totally understand why – they are stunning and really show off your photographs in HD. They also suit most homes and decor trends with the various framing options that are available.
Here’s what Enys’ Mummy said after their viewing session…
“Our photo shoot with Laura was a really great day. We were all put at ease and we have some incredible shots of our son. Our sessions were postponed due to lockdowns, but in the end we managed some first birthday photos and I am so happy and grateful!”
Here are a few other images from other paint splash sessions held at the studio;
I completely understand that parents may not want their little ones to get in such a mess indoors. Why not bring them to the studio? We’ll all have some fun, you’ll have a painted canvas to keep as an additional keepsake and you can leave all the cleaning up and washing to me!
These really are my favourite sessions for 1st birthdays. If you’d love to celebrate your little one’s 1st birthday with a paint splash session, get in touch and let’s have a chat and plan the perfect bespoke photography experience for you.
Much love,
Laura x
