What if my baby won’t settle?
One of the most common concerns I hear from parents regarding booking a newborn photography session is “what if my baby isn’t asleep or won’t settle?”
They think their baby may not be like all the peaceful sleeping babies they see on my website and social media. After all, life at home with a newborn can be tough. Sleepless nights, colic, reflux, feeding patterns, generally getting to know your baby…all sorts of things can often be stressful, so how will a photographer work with a baby they don’t know?
Let me reassure you a little.
During my experience as a newborn photographer, I have come across many little characters and have learnt a huge amount about soothing techniques and what works in a variety of situations. In 2018 alone l photographed, on average, 2 newborn babies a week, and each one taught me a little bit more about how they tick. It’s this wealth of knowledge that makes me get better and better at what I do.
Also, I have never failed to create a beautiful gallery of images for the parents. Each baby slept at least some of the time, and each baby was calm and peaceful when they were awake.
However, some sleep more than others. Some barely flinch when l ask them to move a hand or foot, and some wiggle and twitch at the slightest touch. Some wake easily, and some sleep like logs. Some sleep the entire session, and some need to feed often. Some wee on me if we change into an outfit with no nappy, some are sick on me…and none of that is ever an issue.
My point is, every newborn is different, and all behave in their own unique way while they’re with me, so l take time to get to know each baby and try to understand what they like and don’t like, what they need, and what helps them stay sleepy and calm throughout.
Many parents tell me they learn new soothing techniques as they watch me work too, which l hope really helps them once I leave. For them this may be their first experience with a newborn, while for me it will be one of many. All sessions take place in your home, which will be warm, cosy and comfortable (some parents stay in their PJs too!) meaning the whole experience is relaxing and stress-free.
But what WOULD happen if for some reason your baby didn’t settle on the day? Well, l would be more than happy to try again another day at no extra cost to you.
So, please be reassured, l have comfortably photographed even the most wriggly little babies, the most fussy and the most hungry. It’s all in a day’s work for me, and l promise that your time with me will be peaceful and stress free whilst you sit back, relax and watch me create some beautiful memories for you, that will be loved forever.
