So your friend, sister or cousin has announced they are expecting a baby – exciting! But what can you buy them that will be loved, appreciated and not be grown out of within 5 minutes? I’ve put together a list of 10 ideas to give you a helping hand – some may be obvious, others not so much, but from speaking with other new mums to gather this information, I can guarantee that whichever you choose to go with, it will be a winner!
The new baby will be spoilt rotten as soon as they arrive – what new baby isn’t! From tiny little outfits, to blankets, to teddy bears. There are even gifts a plenty for new big brothers and sisters too. But what about Mum? All new mum’s will be overwhelmed with love as soon as she arrives home with her little bundle, and of course she will appreciate all of the gifts that are received for her new baby and any older siblings. But there are some things that we just don’t think about – new mums need lots of rest, and will spend large stretches of time on her own in the first few weeks/months while her new baby sleeps. You could even gift these items at a baby shower, so that they are ready and waiting for when the need for rest is upon her.
10. A TV / Netflix / Amazon subscription
For those hours when baby is napping, and everyone tells her that she should be napping too, but just can’t. An hour relaxing in front of a good box set or series will be just as sufficient!
9. Muslin Squares
Ok, so these are for the baby really, but they are a saviour for saving Mum’s clothes too! You can never have enough muzzies (I even pop one in my newborn welcome packs when parents book a newborn shoot with me!)
8. A flask or sports bottle
Especially if Mummy is breastfeeding, babies can take a while to settle. Having a warm or cold drink nearby at all times will be much appreciated, when she is being ‘pinned down’ by baby cuddles! There are some amazing persoanlisation options out there as well nowadays…
7. Home cooked food
New mums need to keep their energy levels up to sustain the sleepless nights they endure, and at the end of a long day, cooking a nutritious home made dinner will be bottom of the list – for both parents. Home cooked food that can be simply heated in the microwave will be loved more than you’ll ever know!
6. Mum and Baby Hamper
A hamper of gifts that Mum and Baby can enjoy might include massage oils (perfect for bonding sessions), treats for mum (their favourite miniature bottle, chocolates, biscuits), bibs, muslin squares and dummies for baby, bubble bath for mum and baby, a sleepsuit for baby and new PJs for mum.
5. A copy of the newspaper from the day baby was born.
The way the world is changing at the moment, newspapers may not even be around by the time the baby turns 18 – what a keepsake!
4. A personal keepsake
Something like a pandora charm for her bracelet, or fingerprint silver jewellery – there are so many gorgeous options available.
3. A ‘Mum’ bag
Mum’s bag has just grown substantially with all of the new gear that needs to be taken everywhere. Remind her she is still herself and can remain on trend, as well as taking on the new role of mum, with a gorgeous new Mum bag with plenty of space and compartments. There are lots of amazing leather and leather look options available that don’t simply look like changing bags!
2. Candles and smelly stuff
The first few days, weeks, months and even years are going to be filled with lots of unpleasant smells, let’s face it! Beautifully scented candles and reed diffusers will come in extremely handy!
1. A Newborn Photography Session
You didn’t think I was going to write a whole blog and not mention photographs did you?! Seriously, whether you book with me or someone else, newborn photographs really are a once in a lifetime gift that will keep on giving for years to come. That newborn baby will only be newborn for a matter of weeks, and when they are screaming at 2am, when they look to the wall and see that gorgeous photograph that they fell in love with at the time, they will fall in love all over again and remember that the sleepless nights really are all worth it. If you are interested in gifting a photography session, or contributing towards one, gift vouchers are available for any amount.
